Greensboro is part of a larger metropolitan area called, the Piedmont Triad. The other two major cities that make up the triad are Winston-Salem and High Point. These cities make up the economic and cultural center for the northern-central part of North Carolina. The largest city in the Piedmont Triad is Greensboro. Throughout Greensboro there are a number of unique neighborhoods, ranging from historic to upscale so there is something for everyone. Friendly Center is an open air complex that includes a Macy’s, Sears, Belk, a Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and the largest Harris Teeter in America. Upscale shopping such as the Apple Store, REI, and Anthropologie can be found at The Shops at Friendly Center.

The next largest city in the Triad is Winston-Salem. This city is traditionally known for its involvement in tobacco, textiles and furniture and while these industries are still important, Winston-Salem is now focusing on attracting members of the high-tech industry. Arts and sports are also important to the citizens of Winston-Salem. The first arts council in the nation was founded here in 1949 and the city continues to foster growth in the arts community through the University of North Carolina School of the Arts which is located in Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem University and Wake Forest both field many Division II and Division I teams respectively. You can also catch a game of Dash, Winston-Salem’s Advanced-A baseball team affiliated with the Chicago White Sox.

High Point is the smallest major city in the Piedmont Triad. This city is the only city in North Carolina that stretches into four different counties. Considered and nicknamed the Furniture and Hosiery Capital of the World, High Point has the World’s Largest Chest of Drawers with hosiery spilling out of a drawer to commemorate their nickname. The city is also home to High Point University which is a private university that fields Division I sports.
